Route 420 is trying to make cannabis tourism a thing. Would you use it?
Cameron Bramley from Rolling Stoner has formalised Route 420, a network of cannabis-friendly destinations plus a private travel club. It's been building since about July, and the newest piece is a community map called Smoke Signals, where members add their own finds: viewpoints, rivers, picnic spots, quiet beaches.
It's an obvious idea when you look at the Cannabis Expo numbers from Sandton earlier this year. Exhibitor participation and ticket sales were both up more than 30%, with international companies sniffing around Africa's potential.
I'm torn on this one. Tourism gives a lot of small growers and venues a legal-ish way to make money while the licensing mess drags on. But "cannabis tourism" also invites the same grey-zone problems we already have, just with more foreigners and more money moving through unregulated spots. Route 420 says it verifies destinations, which helps, but self-regulation only gets you so far.
