How did cannabis and people first cross paths?

I have been reading up on the early history of cannabis and how it moved across different civilizations. It hit me that a lot of growers know the modern side of the plant but not much about where it came from or how it got to us.

The part that interests me most is the link to growing. If the plant changed with each region it passed through, that goes a long way toward explaining why the same genetics can turn out so different from one climate to the next.

I put a short audiobook-style clip together on the channel covering the broad strokes of that history. But I want to hear from the history people here. What is the oldest recorded use you have found? Do you think the regional differences we see today trace back to those early spreads?
