African Cannabis Museum Coming to Cape Town – Q4 2026
I've been following some exciting news that I had to share with the 420Forums community.
Cape Town is getting Africa's first cannabis museum, and it's opening later this year. The African Cannabis Museum (TAC), led by the TAC Foundation, is currently in advanced planning phase and aims to open its doors in Q4 2026.
This is massive for us as South African growers and cannabis enthusiasts.
What the museum is about:
The TAC Foundation describes it as a cultural and educational space — not a retail or consumption venue. No cannabis products will be sold in the museum shop. The focus is on research-informed exhibitions, curated storytelling, and immersive visitor experiences covering indigenous knowledge systems and regional cannabis histories across the African continent.
Katrien Oosthuizen from the foundation put it well: "While the plant has deep historical, cultural and economic roots across Africa, its narrative has largely been shaped externally and reduced to policy and prohibition. This initiative is about reclaiming that narrative."
Why this matters to us:
For growers like me in the Western Cape, this is a chance to see the bigger picture. Cannabis arrived in Southern Africa between the 1500s and 1700s through trade routes — long before prohibition, long before the 2018 Constitutional Court ruling, long before the 2024 Cannabis for Private Purposes Act.
The museum creates a platform that connects heritage, traditional knowledge, and contemporary developments. For the Cape Town cannabis community, this is going to be a must-visit destination — and it positions our city as a cultural hub in the emerging legal cannabis landscape.
The exact location hasn't been confirmed yet, but they're looking for a highly visible tourism-aligned spot.
